The Challenge
By 2015, Alabama’s young professional demographic had evolved. For years, YP organizations were viewed by civic elites as "pure parties" or unabashed social networking groups. But that generation matured, demanding validation, resource allocation, and a literal "seat at the table" with legacy institutions. Yet, the "gray hairs" of our corporate communities were still failing to appreciate the massive energy and creativity percolating right under their noses.
Simultaneously, Alabama Media Group (AL.com, The Birmingham News, etc.) was navigating an industry-wide revenue shift. As traditional print subscriptions declined, the corporate mandate was to replace legacy revenue with an active, monthly membership model. The strategy required capturing the loyalty of this highly coveted millennial demographic. AMG needed to transform from a passive media broadcaster into an essential, live-action community convener.
Our Approach
My Role: Founding Producer
Having just sold my association management firm, I arrived at Alabama Media Group with the operational muscle of having already produced more than 60 regional events of 500+ attendees. The mandate was to build a statewide summit, but I architected it as a statewide audit of millennial civic R&D.
The Summit coincided with me turning 40—a fitting capstone to "age out" of the demographic by building a permanent bridge for those coming behind me. I architected the first-ever Young Professionals Summit as a statewide initiative built on four pillars:
Unearthing Grassroots Innovation: Instead of centralized corporate planning, I spent six months traveling to Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Mobile to map what young leaders were actually building. We uncovered and amplified groups doing the real work: a Montgomery YP coalition distributing $2,000 monthly in micro-philanthropy, a Mobile initiative using iPad-mounted bicycles to collect geographic resident feedback, and Rotaract Birmingham’s program impacting 4,000 children annually.
Distributed Influence: Instead of a single, centralized event, we deployed a four-region strategy across the state's major metropolitan hubs. I recruited steering committees of 10 to 12 high-impact young professionals in each market to serve as co-hosts. They drove the programming and recruited speakers, ensuring the summits felt authentically local while my team maintained absolute brand alignment with AL.com.
Actionable Market Data: We engineered a massive data-capture engine to support AMG's sales teams. We commissioned Dr. Susan Fant, a millennial researcher from the University of Alabama, to conduct a comprehensive statewide survey. Distributed via AL.com, the survey captured 3,500 respondents, mapping consumer sentiment, buying decisions, and civic priorities. Dr. Fant presented the resulting report live at the summits.
The "Digital Parlor" Takeaway: To provide immediate, practical value to attendees looking to elevate their civic standing, we hired a professional photographer to shoot high-quality headshots on-site. Hundreds of young leaders walked away with a premium asset to update their digital profiles, cementing their positive affiliation with the AL.com brand.
Our Impact
The Young Professionals Summit successfully built a bridge between a legacy media institution and the state’s emerging power base. We announced the initiative via national syndication as the "First-Ever Alabama Young Professionals Summit," cementing AL.com as a pioneer in statewide generational organizing.
We elevated leaders from across the state, and a review of the speakers and award winners from 2015 reveals that we didn't just host an event—we organized a generation. The people we placed on those stages have ascended to become the dominant corporate and political leaders shaping Alabama today.
60+ Prior Mega-Events: Brought the operational discipline of managing 60+ 500-person events into a legacy corporate media environment.
3,500 Survey Respondents: Captured actionable commercial and civic data from millennials across Alabama to drive corporate sales strategies.
4 Regional Summits: Executed a synchronized, statewide event footprint across Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and Montgomery, culminating in a unified YP Awards program.
200+ Professional Assets Delivered: Provided complimentary, high-quality headshots to attendees, actively upgrading the professional presence of the region's emerging workforce.
On A Personal Note
It was surreal to go from a founder and active member of young professional organizations in Birmingham to a convener of dozens of these organizations across the entire state of Alabama.
Many of those young professionals we recognized in the Summit — including Randall Woodfin — have gone on to become senior executives, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders.
In fact, my work on the Alabama Young Professional Summit was the perfect segue for my transition into supporting young leaders in my role as campaign manager for the Woodfin for Mayor campaign.
The network we built served the Millennial generation. I am confident that what we started will inspire the next generation of leaders.
Honestly,
Ed.
